I’ve just read “Man Unplugged – Secret Men’s Business for Men & Those Who Love Them” by John Broadbent. I found it a courageous, grounded, and deeply humane book.
John writes with rare honesty about the inner lives of men — not from theory or posturing, but from lived experience, reflection, and genuine care. This is not a book that tells men what they should be; it invites them to understand who they are, and why so many struggle silently with identity, purpose, relationships, and emotional expression.
What makes “Man Unplugged” particularly powerful is its tone. It is direct without being judgmental, compassionate without being sentimental, and challenging without being preachy.
John names the unspoken pressures men carry — to perform, provide, stay strong, and stay quiet — and exposes the cost of disconnection that often follows. In doing so, he gives language to experiences that many men feel but rarely articulate.
Importantly, this book is not only for men. Those who love men — partners, parents, leaders, colleagues — will gain a far deeper understanding of the internal world men often keep hidden. That insight alone makes this an invaluable read.
At its heart, Man Unplugged is about reconnection: with self, with others, and with a more grounded, authentic sense of masculinity. It encourages reflection, conversation, and courage — the quiet, everyday courage of showing up honestly.
This is an important book. One that deserves to be read slowly, discussed openly, and revisited often. Well done, John Broadbent!
